Chapter 22

After Mrs. Reed’s death, Jane stays at Gateshead nearly a month. Although she wishes to leave immediately, Georgiana cannot bear the thought of being alone with her sister and requests her to stay until the time she leaves for London to join her uncle, Mr. Gibson. Eliza joins a nunnery near Lisle and takes her abode in a religious house. Thus, the three cousins finally bid each other goodbye.

Jane reaches Thornfield after a long journey. Near the meadows she sees Mr. Rochester sitting on a stone step with a book and pencil. As he sees her, he says ‘Hello’. She is pleased to see her master, Adèle, Mrs. Fairfax, Leah, and Sophie. Everyone welcomes her with a smile. She feels that there is no happiness like that of being loved by your fellow creatures and the feeling that your presence in is an addition to their comfort.

Even after a fortnight, she hears no news of Mr. Rochester’s marriage and sees no preparations going on for such an event. It especially surprises her that there are no visits to Ingram Park. She cherishes a secret hope, feeling that the match must have been broken off.
